Tech Prep articulation is the process of developing a formal, written and published agreement that identifies courses (or sequence of courses), from one of the high school districts or ROP named above, that are comparable to, or acceptable in lieu of, specific course requirements at Chaffey College.  Successful completion of an articulated high school/ROP Tech Prep course assures the student and the faculty that the student has taken the appropriate course, received the necessary instruction and preparation, and that similar outcomes can be assured, enabling progress to the next level of instruction at Chaffey College.

The role of faculty in Articulation is the actual process of developing and reviewing curriculum and coursework to determine course comparability between institutions.  Faculty members in each discipline are responsible for the review of course content, the identification of comparable courses, and the authorization of acceptance of specific courses.  Once this review, identification, and formal written acceptance process has occurred, a course (or set of courses) is said to have been “articulated.”  Implicit in the articulation process is involvement, communication, and cooperation between the respective faculties who mutually develop curriculum and establish requirements and standards for articulated courses.

Articulated Tech Prep courses are not to be construed as “equivalent” but rather as comparable, or acceptable in lieu of each other.  The content of the courses on the respective campuses is such that successful completion of the course on one campus assures the necessary background, instruction, and preparation to enable the student to progress to the next level of instruction at another campus.  Changes in courses at either institution may affect the articulation and should be communicated to the other campus in a timely fashion.  Periodic changes should be reported formally with each new academic year or catalog cycle via a curriculum update.  All members in this partnership share in the vital role of determining appropriate course equivalency. [California Articulation Policies and Procedures Handbook; 2006]

Placement Credit: provides recognition of the student learning outcomes achieved in the High School/ROP course that has been articulated with a comparable Chaffey College course.  The articulated Tech Prep course will be recognized for purposes of (1) meeting a prerequisite requirement, (2) earning a certificate, (3) meeting a course major requirement in a degree.  The student will not be required to substitute another course; however, the articulated course cannot be counted towards the 60 semester units required for a degree.

Credit by Examination (CX): allows credit for the articulated Chaffey course to be posted on the Tech Prep students’ college transcript with appropriate unit credit awarded.  Credit by Examination can be awarded through 1)  participation in the Credit by Examination (CX) process at Chaffey College (fee waived), or 2) successful completion of an approved assessment process administered via the high school/ROP and developed in partnership and agreement with Chaffey College faculty, or 3) successful completion of an approved examination/certification by a professional agency that verifies skill acquisition comparable to the students learning outcomes (SLO) of the college course.

The Tech Prep Application Process has been developed as follows:

  1. Chaffey College faculty and High School/ROP program teachers confer and authorize course(s) articulation agreements.
  1. While enrolled in a HS/ROP articulated course, the student submits a Chaffey College-Tech Prep application to Chaffey College.  He/she is given status as a Tech Prep student and receives a Chaffey College ID number.
  1. Upon successful completion of the articulated course, the Tech Prep Certification form is completed by the student and the HS/ ROP teacher.
  1. The HS/ROP teacher gives the completed Tech Prep Certification form to the High School Registrar.   The signature of the Registrar will verify that the student has completed the course with an “A” or “B” grade [in lieu of official high school transcript].  The Registrar will send Certification forms with any supporting documentation to the Articulation Office at Chaffey College in envelopes provided by the college.  Certification affirms the requirements of the course articulation agreement have been met.
  1. The completed Tech Prep Certification form is received by the Articulation Office, reviewed for compliance, and appropriate course credit is authorized.
  • Placement credit:  Meeting a prerequisite requirement, earning a certificate, or meeting a course major requirement in a degree.
  • Credit by Examination [CX]: Articulated Chaffey College course is entered on student transcript, grade designated as “CX” and units are awarded.  Tech Prep students will have access to Chaffey View on-line and may view and download unofficial transcripts.
  1. Students will receive a letter of congratulations and acknowledgement of credit earned.
  1. The original document will be scanned into the Chaffey College database.  Copies of the completed Tech Prep Certification document will be made available to initiating High School District or ROP.
